New Year's Message for the Year 2025

Happy New Year!

At the start of the year 2025, I would like to extend my New Year's greetings to everyone in the Sumitomo Riko Group.
Unlike last year, this year's New Year's holidays were peaceful both socially and in terms of climate.
As in previous years, I woke up early every morning to take a walk in a nearby park.

At the end of 2024, I went to a library and borrowed 10 books that caught my eye to read.
Among them, I would like to introduce two books that I found interesting.
The first book is “the Kiyosu Conference: Hideyoshi's Strategic Battle to take over the country”, written by Hiroyuki Shiba/published by Ebisukosho Publication.
It is said that Hideyoshi Toyotomi smoothly took over the country after the Battle of Yamazaki and the Kiyosu Conference, but Hideyoshi Toyotomi always tried to understand the changing situation. Furthermore, I thought that the fact that he achieved great results through flexible responses and agile actions could also be relevant to our management.

The other book is “The Wall of Ossans", written by Chiyako Sato and published by Kodansha.
Chiyako Sato is the first female head of a national newspaper's political department.

The book described in detail the difficulties women face in advancing in society.
She defines “Ossan” as “those who are suffering from imagination deficiency.
She refers to a state or people who are unable to imagine the backgrounds of others because they consciously or unconsciously desire to maintain the status quo in a society that has become the default (pre-set standard), such as male dominance.
She noted that this condition exists in both men and women, older and younger.
This made me think about some points that are in line with what I have always said about “people who are bound by past concepts.”

At the Beginning of the Year: The Importance of Verbal Communication

As I have mentioned many times since I became the President and CEO, I would like to reaffirm the importance of dialogue and other forms of verbal communication at the beginning of the year 2025.
Common sense and values change with the times.
Our Group is expanding its business scale, and people with diverse ways of thinking are working on a global scale.
Please take a fresh look at the importance of “verbal communication” in a way that is in line with current values.
Now that diversity is spreading, I would like you to abandon the idea that “I don't have to tell them what to do” or “I want them to grow up watching my back.” Please proceed with everything by having a dialogue or other means to reconcile your own perceptions with those of others.
The slogan for this year is “Let's not be bound by past concepts, seize change as an opportunity and boldly take on new challenges!”
Since assuming office as the President and CEO, the company's business and performance have greatly improved thanks to the efforts of everyone in the Sumitomo Riko Group to overcome the difficult times of the Corona pandemic and the semiconductor shortage.
We would like to achieve further sustainable growth in the future; however, we will become “Ossans” if we are content with maintaining the status quo.
Rather than being satisfied with business as usual, let us grow in step with the times and cooperate with our peers inside and outside the company.
This year also, let us continue to do our best in our daily work, faithfully adhering to the principles of “Banji-nissei,” “Shinyo-kakujitsu,” and “Fusu-furi,” and keeping S.E.C.Q. (safety, environment, compliance, and quality) as the basis of our business operations!
